The Jungle Jacket was designed in 1962 following a request from the Army as a specialized uniform for Special Forces personnel in Vietnam. The single-breasted jacket was made of 5.5 oz. OG-107 windproof cotton poplin and featured two slanted chest cargo pockets and two lower cargo pockets. The design also featured epaulettes, waist tabs, pen pockets behind both chest cargo pockets, and an internal gas flap designed to prevent chemical agents from escaping through the buttoned front closure.
The tropical combat uniform was ideal for Vietnam because it was both lightweight and quick-drying, but the exposed pocket buttons had a tendency to get snagged in the jungle.
